December 13, 2024 – DAN Europe, the global diving safety organisation, is taking action to support Members who were affected by recent liveaboard incidents, including the tragic Sea Story sinking in the Red Sea. The organisation has implemented specific initiatives to address the impact of those events on its Members.
Financial Support
The DAN Europe Foundation has allocated €25,000 from the Claudius Obermaier Fund to assist DAN Members impacted by the Sea Story and other recent liveaboard tragedies. Affected Members will be eligible to get up to €1,000 in financial assistance. This initiative is a gesture of solidarity aimed at easing some of the burdens these Members are facing following the incident.
Psychological Support Services
Recognising the emotional toll such incidents can have, the DAN Europe Medical team is already offering, in selected cases, remote psychological consultations with specialists in psychotherapy. The service is designed to provide immediate guidance and support to those grappling with the aftermath of traumatic events.
Promoting Diver Safety
In its ongoing commitment to diver safety, DAN Europe is launching a comprehensive safety campaign addressing the risks associated with liveaboard operations, including fire and sinking hazards. This initiative aims to raise awareness within the diving community and among operators, fostering best practices to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
A Commitment Beyond Boundaries
The organisation acknowledges the broader challenges divers face during such events. “Our mission goes beyond legal obligations; it is about standing with our community in times of need,” said Laura Marroni, CEO of DAN Europe. “These actions reflect our dedication to the safety, well-being, and resilience of affected Members.”

About the Claudius Obermaier Fund
The charity fund was created in 2004 by DAN Europe, to take care of those divers and their families who find themselves in difficult situations. The Fund has so far helped 29 cases that needed attention, in addition to the numerous cases in which it is currently helping divers and their families who were victims of recent shipwrecks.
About DAN Europe
DAN Europe (Divers Alert Network Europe) is an international non-profit medical and research organization dedicated to the health and safety of divers. Since its inception, DAN Europe has been at the forefront of providing medical assistance, educational resources, and innovative safety initiatives for the global diving community.
About IDA
IDA Insurance Limited is a subsidiary of DAN Europe, established in 2008 to provide exclusive insurance solutions tailored to the needs of divers, and available exclusively to DAN Members. Products focus on critical aspects of diver safety, including but not limited to coverage for diving accidents and medical evacuation. In case of shipwrecks, IDA does not currently offer boat liability insurance, a coverage typically provided through specialised marine insurance policies addressing risks and liabilities associated with vessel ownership or operation. In a shipwreck, boat liability insurance would typically cover damages such as loss of property or third-party liabilities.
